According to legend, Château Ausone takes its name from Decimus Magnus Ausonius. The latter is a famous Latin poet, also a political adviser to the Lower Roman Empire. He lived in Bordeaux in the 4th century, in the Gallo-Roman villa of Palat, located on the estate. The vines of this property, fifty years old, are ideally located mid-slope. They consist of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. Their moderate yield (33 hectoliters per hectare) contributes to the production of concentrated and intense wines with a high aging potential. Great vintages can be kept in this way for up to half a century. The estate was one of the few Saint-Émilion to be spared the terrible frosts of February 1956. Its location is probably not for nothing: facing east-south-east, it is protected to the north as well as to the the west.
